THIS. That Time When Kids Weren't Being Jerks

Writer's picture: maggie bittnermaggie bittner

There are many reasons to hate on our children in 2020, but this video isn't one of them.

Many of us are feeling the oppression of spending waaay too much "quality" time with kids who are far too often whining, complaining, avoiding, procrastinating, yelling, demanding, etc. etc. these days. (Like, were they ALWAYS these massive jerks and it's just more noticeable now because they're ALWAYS around us, or is their overall jerkiness a sheer symptom of life during COVID? Or is it answer C, all of the above?)

And then come the kids in THIS video about kindness to prove that I am being just as big of a jerk as the jerkiest jerk of a kid.

I found the link hiding in one of the many notes I keep in my phone. It's from February—before most were aware of the educational wasteland waiting for us—yet it seems far more relevant now. There's something about kids explaining the obvious that hits harder than any adult trying to do the same, especially during a time when so many of us have become makeshift teachers ourselves. And it's not your average "aww, aren't kids cute" type of thing, either, so hang in there with me. In a heartfelt nutshell, these kids get it.

No mater how annoying our offspring can be on a day-to-day basis, it's always helpful to pause and remember that they can be really fucking awesome too. I know, it's a hard pill to swallow right now. But you should probably just get over it and give it go. After all, it's only a matter of time before our kids go and do something incredibly dumb again and POOF! the luster of this realization will fade into the dark recesses of our brains....like how it was to live in a word where real pants were mandatory.
