How much money is not enough money? 💰

About 6 months ago, Kid A dropped and shattered the screen of his iPad. And by “his iPad“ I mean my iPad. Anyhoo, it’s 100% out of commission. And he wants a new one. A fact he reminds me of every. single. day.

On one such day, upon his regularly scheduled reminder, he added an extra special sense of urgency. “Go get one at the store this weekend“ he said. So I took the liberty of I reminding him that an iPad is an expensive thing and not something you just go and pick up at the store like a gallon of milk ...or Mom’s vape oil. (Even though you totally can because Target. But I was not about to go there, both figurative and physically.)

And then, just to add an extra bit of zing to the convo, I told Kid A that we don’t have enough money for a new iPad right now. We have to think about it and save for it. Yes, this was for effect. I don’t often take every chance I get to give him “one to grow on” but, come on. This one was just too easy. You break mom’s iPad at the ripe young age of four, you pay in life lessons. His response? “I have money!” The rest of the discussion went something like this:

Me: Oh yeah? You have money?

Kid A: Yeah! At home. In my piggy bank.

Me: How much money do you have?

A: How much money is not enough money for an iPad?

Me: Well, they cost at least two hundred dollars. Do you have that many dollars?

A: I have fourteen dollars! [Thinks.] Or maybe twenty. Or three. Or...none.

Me: That’s what I thought.
